"Lesbos locals lose lesbian appeal."

When my buddy Fragano sent me this headline, I initially thought it was about the island being snubbed by homosexual female tourists. But no.

Three residents of the Greek island of Lesbos have lost an attempt to ban the use of the word "lesbian" to describe gay women.

I just write 'Lesbian' for the islander and 'lesbian' for gay woman.

I thought the islanders went by "Lesbosians".

Lesbosians sound like an alien race from the original Star Trek.

That icon is of actress Gabrielle Anwar, who stars in TV show Burn Notice. See http://serge-lj.livejournal.com/144928.html for details.

Be still, my heart.

The Enterprise discovers a world populated only by women, who reproduce thru cloning. Kirk of course helps the Lesbosian leader, played by Diana Muldaur, discover the one true way to fulfillment. And are we barfing yet?

That's fine as far as it goes, but what about when the word is used as part of the name of an activist organisation, like the Gay and Lesbian Union of Greece?

(This was actually one of the things the people from Lesbos were specifically complaining about.)

Not Diana Muldaur, Serge, Honor Blackman.

I see your point.

On the other hand, Muldaur has been in quite a few Roddenberry creations, including an episode of Planet Earth where she played the ruler of a society where men are lower-class citizens and we even get a let's-put-men-on-the-auction-block scene.

Those men had way too much time on their hands.

That one I hadn't seen. But Honor Blackman would be perfect in the role. You should see the early *Avengers*

I did see her in a best-of DVD. Had I not known it was her, I'd never have recognized Blackman, because she looks very different from the way she did, but a few years later, in Goldfinger.

Ah, then you know what I mean.

Who says the episode can have Blackman and Muldaur as their society's co-rulers who find themselves both vying for the attention of Captain James Tiberius Kirk?

(Heck, if someone had come up with a similar premise for a TV show of the 1960s, I bet you that's exactly the kind of plot they'd have wound up with.)

You have struck the nail on the head.
