the old span, and the new
Jan. 22nd, 2010 03:09 amFor quite some time now, work has been going on to replace the east span of San Francisco's Bay Bridge with a new one that will presumably withstand earthquakes better than the old one did. Remember 1989's quake, and how one section of the top deck had collapsed on the bottom one? From one Bay Area trip to the next, I've seen it slowly take shape, and work to connect it to Yerba Buena Island (on the other side of which stands the suspended span that goes directly into San Francisco) began at the end of last summer. Below are a couple of photos taken on September 26, 2009.
