hag queens and monsters
Mar. 16th, 2010 06:23 amThe April issue of Realms of Fantasy was its usual self, only more so.
Christopher Kastensmidt’s ”The Fortuitous Meeting of Gerard van Hoost and Oludara” is about Gerard, who has come to the New World, more specifically to Brazil, to seek fortune and adventure. Alas, he is a Protestant in a Catholic Land and none will let him join their monster-hunting expeditions so he decides to set up his own. Doing so on his own would be rather problematic though. The solution presents itself when he encounters Oludara, a slave fresh off a boat from Africa and greatly smarter than anybody else around him.
MK Hobson’s "The Hag Queen’s Curse" has narrator Kat not sure she will ever escape 1986’s Newport, Oregon, with her homosexual friend Jeff.
Every Saturday night, they go to the local disco and every time they go thru the same sequence of events, with Jeff taking Kat to task for not putting aside the money that will allow them to leave together, and Kat then stomping off to the bathroom. The same routine every Saturday night.
Until the Pirate shows up.
Dressed like Adam Ant.

Kat’s dreams for San Francisco are bizarre but vague; she’s thinking of hitting big in the roller derby or as a professional dominatrix.Jeff’s ambitions are more specific but only slightly less bizarre: he wants to meet the accountant of his dream and open an H&R Block tax-preparation outlet with him.
