sergebroom: (Anwar)
Watched "Dangerous Beauty" last night.
Enjoyed it as much as I did 13 years ago.
sergebroom: (Superman)
I just finished Carrie Vaughn's novel "After the Golden Age". Normally, I'd have done so tonight, but, by the time my bus ride to work ended, there was no freaking way I'd delay finding out how Celia West would overcome the bitterness of being the ordinary daughter of a city's superpowered protectors.

Recommended.
sergebroom: (Master of the World)
I had a wonderful time at Bubonicon 43, which was held in Albuquerque this last weekend. For that, I thank its chairs, Kristen Dorland and Craig Chrissinnger. I was quite surprised during the opening ceremonies, when toasmaster Ian Tregillis told the audience of the various guests, one of whom turned out to be yours truly. Sure, I was on three panels, but I felt like a phoney at times, compared to its real guests. One of my panels was my "Steampunk and Hollywood" talk, which I ended with two minutes to spare. I wasn't sure how well it had gone with the small audience, but later during the con, I was frequently and profusely thanked for it by some of its attendees. My Victorian Time Traveller's outfit also got me quite a bit of praise.

Besides that... I got to chat with local writer Betsy James, with Carrie Vaugh, and with Connie Willis, who autographed my copy of the recent small-press release of "Firewatch". I attended the reading by a few writers, including Victor Milan. By the end of the con, I got to chat some more with Willis, Walter Jon Williams and others. We got quite a few laughs when someone mentioned the stupid line in "Jurassic Park" about prehistoric herbivores being harmless, and brought up instances of people who did really stupid things. I did mention the time I myself was stupid, when in 1982 I decided to wade in the nearby waters while waiting for a Shuttle launch, waters that I was later told had alligators in them.

But enough of this blabbing of mine.
'They' say that a picture is worth a thousand words, so here goes.

Doranna Durgin, Andy Kuhn, Carrie Vaughn, Connie Willis and Craig Butler...

Local writer Doranna Durgin and d'Artagnan...

And if you think a Tea Party featuring a HellGirl is disquieting...

How is this, for unadulterated horror?

This is Patricia Rogers, local fan, and great fan of Ray Bradbury...
"A robot head, Serge? What robot head on top of my head?"

At the Green Slime Awards, Kathy Kubica (L) passed on the Slime Ring to the award's new mistress, Jessica Coyle, who then told us about the worst books, toys and movies of the last twelve months, after which she and Randi Tinkham re-enacted the cat fight from "MegaPython vs Gatoroid".

By the end, concom's Duke and Tanley McMullan were a bit fatigued.

See you next year!
