"Guardian" is the latest in military space adventure series "Beyond the Frontier" by Jack Campbell aka John Hemry. I haven't read as much of it as I'd like, due to Life - but mostly because of the interference of Work, which is not the same as Life. I've enjoyed what I *have* read though, as expected, and the above exchange between the hero and his fellow Captain and wife is a good example of the reason why.
