the heart and the doctor
Nov. 12th, 2013 06:37 pmIt's kind of funny that I like "Doctor Who". If you had told me that at the end of Denver's worldcon of 1981, I'd have expressed an intense skepticism. It took years before hearing the city's name stopped making me feel like someone had dropped a weight of lead inside my stomach, and for years after that I refused to watch any of the British SF series then shown on PBS. What does one have to do with the other? Someone had broken my heart at that worldcon, and even when we were in the same hotel room with other fans who were watching the Doctor or the Hitchhiker do their thing, she mentally stayed as far away from me as if I'd been dumped on the Moon. Even when I drove thru the city in 2003, I still felt the old twinge. It took Denver's 2008 worldcon to completely close the door on that chapter of my life. And, again I now follow the Doctor's adventures.
