Takes me back

I was exposed to the Oz books at my favorite cousin's house in Mill Valley when we were both about ten (well, she found them earlier, so they were around her house). That was probably my first exposure to fanciful worlds, unless it was Alice. I'm not sure I've ever sat through an entire showing of the Garland movie.

Never once from beginning to end? Why is that? I've never read the books so I can't tell what you had issue with. Is there a difference in tone? Or in how the appearance of the characters was changed? I personally cared that much about Garland as Dorothy, but that was the only problem I had with the movie taken on its own.

Not out of any issue with it, and I like the music and the performances by Garland (and Lahr, and all the rest of the cast). I'm just not much of a TV fan (other than sports or news). I'm to the point where I'm not even looking forward to the return of "Lost" next week because I begrudge the hour it takes to watch it.

It's not really snobbery, I just don't seem to have the diligent attention required. I tend to read while the tube's on for background noise.

Not much of a TV fan? Not even for old movies? Turner Classic Movies is the place where my wife and I spend the most time, when we're not reading. It's where I've come to appreciate all those old-timers, like Edward G. Robinson. Who, by the way, was born Emmanuel Goldenberg, in Romania.
