My wife and I watched 2010's "Centurion", about the 9th Legion that disappeared into Pict territory. What did I think? Well, the first 65 minutes of this 97-minute film was such a limb-chopping blood-spurting fest that I almost expected someone to start doing an impersonation of Monty Python's Black Knight. After that, the story shows a marked improvement when the few remaining Romans, on the run from very grumpy Picts, find refuge in the home of an outcast Pictish woman, played by one Imogen Poots. Yes, her name really is Imogen Poots.

Two thumbs down.
Or off.

Well I liked the movie! But then, throw people in some slightly anachronistic costumes and I'm fairly satisfied.

Imogen Poots is a fabulous name - almost as good as Fenella Woolgar and Benedict Cumberbatch.

One movie I'm looking forward to is "The Eagle", from Rosemary Sutcliff's novel about Roman Britain.

As for fabulous names, how about Pete Postlethwaite?

A friend has seen The Eagle and was sorely disappointed. She's read all drafts of the script and they wound up with the worst edit of the worst draft, plus dumbed it down with Hollywood beefcake. She said it wasn't even entertaining is camp.

Pete Postlethwaite was a phenomenal actor with a name to match. He may be more famous for other roles, but he will always be the delightfully reprehensible Obediah Hakeswill (another awesome british name!) to me.

Last time I worked ren faire, I was Ophelia Quickly.

"...they wound up with the worst edit of the worst draft..."
Why am I not shocked?

Ophelia Quickly?
Is she related to Miranda Actsofkindness?
(Yes, I made that one up.)

No, but she had a sister called Eulalie.

I like Miranda Actsofkindness. I'll put that in the If I Ever Do Ren Faire file, along with Lavinia Pestis and Abishag Bracegirdle.

I saw that over Christmas for the first (and last) time.

Now I understand why the film couldn't get a distribution deal in America.

I forgot to mention.... I rather liked "King Arthur", with Clive Owen as Artorius, but the rest of the world felt differently.
