"I love deadlines - I especially like the sound they make as they go swooshing by."

I found that in one of those 'motivational' parodies of life at the office. Oh, and today is Evil Rooster's last day at her current job. Was, if one keeps in mind that she's on the other side of the Atlantic.

But the Atlantic isn't all that wide....

True, bu I have a feeling that she will be feeling the actual distance in every bone of her body by the time she lands in San Francisco, which should be tomorrow.

Well, that's double the width of the Atlantic. Almost Pacific-wide.

Indeed. When the Rooster has landed, she will definitely be fatigued.

That's certainly true. It's fatiguing enough flying from Atlanta to either London or Madrid.

Too bad we can't be there when she lands. We could give her a ticker-tape parade.

If we could find some ticker tape (I haven't seen a telex machine in years).

How about what comes out of office shredders?

Does that count as ticker tape?

Well, if you glue many strips together, you will get a thicker tape.

Ba-da-bing!

People have been shot for less....

On ticker tape, I'm a purist. I worked as a wire service reporter back in the early 80s and cut many strips of tape to run through the reader.

Hah! You're just jealous because I thought of it first. Still, I guess it's a moot point since none of us will be at that airport today. Our ticker-tape welcome will have to be of a metaphorical nature.

True, the welcome will have to be metaphorical.

Are you going to be heading to SF?

We'll be on the road on Friday, April 5, and will be in the Bay Area the next day by lunch time. We'll leave to drive back here Saturday, April 14.

That's a long drive! Better than in the winter, I suppose. Give my best to Abi.

I'll tell her. As for the ride, it's only 1100 miles each way, thru beautiful landscapes.

That's still a long drive, beautiful landscapes or no. The longest I've been on was from San Diego to Morehead, KY. And that put me off long drives.

My first really long drive was when we moved back to the Bay Area from Toronto. Not quite fully transcontinental, but about 3 times the distance from here to the Bay. After that, 1100 miles don't feel like a big deal.

I suppose it wouldn't. Not after that drive!

I'll be darned. Another teletypist. I spent two years cutting tape and transmitting it while in the Navy.

On long drives, I've crossed the country three times via automobile. The last time we had to limp into Phoenix with a cracked block in our 1965 Buick Special.

That's a lot of driving! I can think of worse places to break down than Phoenix (overheating in Yuma, for one thing).

You must have cut a hell of a lot of tape.

Oh, I did. A few years ago I wrote a post (http://www.linkmeister.com/blog/archives/000519.html) about the Navy career.

Phoenix was fine, since we had relatives there (it was stay in Flagstaff for three days while the car was being repaired or head south at 35mph; we chose the latter).

Better to be broken down where you have relatives, I suppose. And Phoenix would have more attractions than Flagstaff.
