I just spent one hour on the wrapup of a non-infernal project, but I didn't mind because it was for one of my favorite users. Not only that, but this comes just in time for my mid-year review. My boss may express some unhappiness at my not having taken any database training yet, but she'll have a hard time holding that against me when this little project of mine is saving the team lots of money and errors in data entry.

So, I guess my being on vacation IS for real now. I've got a full bag of lime-flavored chips, a full carton of raspberry-flavored pop, and a stack of Skeptical Inquirer issues to go thru. I hope there are aren't too many gnats buzzing around the patio.

By the way, may I recommend USA TV's summer series Burn Notice? It stars Jeffrey Donovan, last seen in the American version of Touching Evil. This show is about a spy who suddenly finds himself out of a job, without any explanation. So, while he's looking for the truth, he works as a detective using his skills to, for example, outcon a con-man who steals old ladies's savings. And he does this with the help of Bruce Campbell and Gabrielle Anwar. I don't know if the trend of original TV series for summer started because someone was looking for a home for failed projects, but we definitely don't get rejects anymore.

Oh, and don't forget that Doctor Who's new season begins on the SciFi Channel tonight, and Eureka next Tuesday.

Happy days are here again.

Now, if only I could get my wife into Doctor Who....

My wife liked Eccleston, but never cared much for Tennant. I got used to him, and the good stories helped. But at least she won't walk out of the room when I watch the show.

The Eccleston Doctor Who is being shown on our PBS station, but late on a Saturday night and she has to get up early on Sunday mornings.

First I'd have to find the Sci-Fi Channel on my cable system. I know I get it, but...

I keep reading wonderful things about Dr. Who but confess I've never seen it (or even heard of it till it was mentioned at ML).

I had known of the show for a long time, but what little snippets I had caught didn't look that appealing. When the show was revived for the 21st Century, I gave it a chance ad loved it, especially the episode where the Doctor and Rose visit Earth 5 billion years in the future just as its many descendent races are coming back from all over the galaxy to pay homage to the homeworld.

I'm surprised, since it's been in existence since 1963 (I'm old enough to remember the earliest Doctor).

It occurs to me that when I was younger I spent an awful lot of time without television. First on Guam in 69-70, where there was none available. The fraternity house in Tucson had no set. Then two years in Japan without a set (and even the barracks only got Japanese shows). Three years on Kwajalein where there was no TV service (there were video tapes, very late, mostly sports; the only 1975 World Series game I saw was the 6th, with the Fisk homerun).

So from 1968 through 1978 I basically had no access to television. Huh. I'd never really put all that together before.

I didn't see any television between 1968 and 1975, myself. I can't say that I missed it much.

No. Of course, if I'd been living someplace where everyone else was watching and I'd voluntarily cut myself off, I'd have been left out of water-cooler conversations, but as it was, all the people I worked with were in the same boat.

I was in a slightly different situation, inasmuch as others were watching -- but by no means everybody else.
