I spent part of the weekend trying to figure out what’s wrong with the interface between one of my programs and our system’s Oracle database. Supposedly there's a cartesian join in there, and those are a big no-no, but I couldn't find it. That lengthy search didn't prevent me from finally putting up lights in the Christmas Tree, and this without any need for my wife to supervise. I hanged only one decoration, because it’s my feeling that it doesn’t need any more than that.

As for my Oracle problem, I have a software on my computer that should have helped me pinpoint where things are going wrong, but it sems to be missing some options. Tomorrow I'll find someone in tech support who can help set up the software properly.

Good luck. Every time I go for Oracle training, I make comments about learning to scry chicken entrails and interpet bezoars. You can learn alot about the people you work with by observing their response to your announcement.

So, it's not just me? Come to think of it, when I started exchanging emails with Abi, I told her what kind of database we use and I seem to remember that she made a snort of derision.

I've been working with a developer on a database project that started out (not with or by me) with a basic Access desktop project, morphed into a Microsoft SQL implementation, and now it's been swapped into a MYSQL project. I just do what I can to try and break it and keep suggesting things for user interface.

I loved being a developer, and I love being a tester. I hate this project. I used to feel positive and excited about this project, but not anymore. Not for quite some time. I'm working with the system today, and working with it makes me cranky and frustrated. Grr. Btw, the developer is a great guy, very responsive and capable. Our project lead is giving him lousy direction, and I have to be careful how many times I interact directly with the developer, or we both get in trouble. Dang it, now I've been whining and kinda co-opted your LJ. All I really meant to communicate is that I can sincerely empathize with your problems.

Thanks! As you know, there are days we need a place to vent. Heck, look at Fragano and his paper grading. I wince sympathetically every time he posts that he's reviewing papers. Then I want to give him a hug and buy him a beer to help cheer him up and sustain his good humor through the travail.

Yeah. I'm not sure how he does it. Maybe the same way I do, by focusing on the good things, like one's significant other, like Making Light's community and the friendships that have come of it and which never would have happened without it.

As for my database problem, it appears that I did fix the damned thing on my own. The co-worker who was dragged into this by our manager pointed out that I should have given it more time to run thru the new script before assuming there was still a problem. Now, the question is whether my manager will remember that I fixed the problem more than he/she'll remember my co-worker being brought in. We shall see.
