When I was at the San Francisco office, the week before Christmas, my manager's manager came over to give me an Excellence Award that my manager had worked to get me for my work on our unix server's business-continuation project in 2007. Yesterday, during our staff meeting, with me back to telecommuting in from New Mexico, my manager brought up the award and asked me to read it for the team since she didn't have a copy of it with her. I think I didn't do a good job of it, reading too softly and too fast. After the meeting, I wrote to my manager to explain that I was very grateful for what she had done, but that my reading the award in front of everybody had made me feel like I was patting myself on the back.

That can be very embarrassing. On the other hand, professionally each of us has to blow our own trombone.

I've just finished going over the galleys for a journal article (which looks set to be one of two publications I do this year).

I personally prefer the haut-bois (aka the hoboe) to the trombone, due to Bernard Hermann's evil influence, but you're right. It's just that I am not that comfortable doing it, and certainly not when the moment wasn't of my own choosing.

That being said, my best wishes to you, regarding your article.

So, you have to blow your own oboe, then...

I know, I'm not comfortable doing it either.

Congratulations on the award, sympathies with the embarrassment, and remember: An oboe is an ill wind that nobody blows good.

Thanks. I should remind myself that being embarassed by such a situation sure beats being metaphorically spanked in front of the whole team.

Since you're so uncomfortable patting your own back, we'll have to do it for you.

Huzzah! Serge is the best! Go you!
