When I was at the San Francisco office, the week before Christmas, my manager's manager came over to give me an Excellence Award that my manager had worked to get me for my work on our unix server's business-continuation project in 2007. Yesterday, during our staff meeting, with me back to telecommuting in from New Mexico, my manager brought up the award and asked me to read it for the team since she didn't have a copy of it with her. I think I didn't do a good job of it, reading too softly and too fast. After the meeting, I wrote to my manager to explain that I was very grateful for what she had done, but that my reading the award in front of everybody had made me feel like I was patting myself on the back.
