I saw the movie Jumper last night. It wasn't bad. Blah is the word, even though there was a lot of sound and fury, all of it ultimately signifying not much. The best parts were the coming attraction for the Indiana Jones movie and, before that, the car commercial that involved a little dog running away from other dogs by using a tire as if it were an unanchored squirrel wheel. At least the little dog got something out of this, with his escape ending inside a store filled with yummy salami.

What a pity. The book's terrific.

So I heard on Making Light. I wonder how different they are. What is the book about, in a nutshell?

Abused kid discovers he can jump, saves girl and world. It's a really good YA novel with no room for Samuel L. Jackson at all.

That is certainly different from the movie. As for Jackson... If I knew I were being chased by him, especially after getting zapped by his electric whip, the last thing I'd do would be to take to Rome the girl I had a crush on in high-school. There is also the little matter that it might get her killed.

There is no electric whip in the book. The girl's in danger, but she's not all squealy about it.

The girl in the movie didn't squeal too much, but her main function is to be pretty, and to be Jackson's hostage. Vesper Lynd she is not.

Bleh. I think I'll stay home and reread the books.

You could always rent the DVD. Or maybe not. There are better ways to spend one's time - for example, any movie with Hugh Jackman in it, even if it's van Helsing.

Not even...okay, yeah, if my fast-forward button is in good working order.

As I understand it, the book is so very different from the movie, that Gould wrote another one--Jumper: Griffin's Story--to go with the movie.

Frankly, I thought the Griffin's character was more interesting than the hero, whom I call hero only in the sense of his being the main character with whom we're supposed to sympathize.

I respect your taste in movies, so I'm disappointed that "Jumper" didn't impress. I was rather looking forward to that one.

Ah, well. Maybe I'll go just for the little dog. ;-)

So it goes. Well, there are quite a few F/SF movies coming out this year that should be more rewarding whether or not they have a little dog in them or before.

By the way, I am quite bummed that the Star Trek movie's release has been changed from late December this year to May of next year. Bah humbug.
