Remember when old movies used to have night-time scenes that obviously had been filmed during the day? I think the term for that was day for night. I've always liked the French equivalent term, nuit américaine, or American night.

That's the title of a film by Truffaut, La nuit américaine (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070460/), including the delectable Jacqueline Bissett who translates the phrase at one point in the film ('he means "day for night"').

It's been a long time since I saw it, but I remember enjoying it. Then again, Truffaut is one of the few French filmmakers of his generation that I liked, maybe because, to me anyway, there was warmth.
