sergebroom: (Superman)

Anybody saw Ironman last night? The cast was great. So were the SFX, especially during the final battle. The plot had humor. And yet... Something was lacking. Some mythical dimension, maybe, moments like in Superman returns when Kal-El is high above Metropolis and he watches, making sure that everybody is safe. Or that scene in the 2nd Spiderman when Peter Parker collapses after saving a train from destruction and people carry him away like a Knight fallen in battle.

We saw it yesterday evening. The plot was decent, the SFX were fantastic, and it could have used a little more je ne sais quoi..but I'm sure they needed that for the sequels. I found it interesting that they went with the "Tony Stark is Iron Man" storyline -- I can remember when IM wasn't publically identified, and then sometime during the 70s he "came out". He was one of the few superheroes who did make his identity known.

I was reminded of the Transformers during the fight scenes. I figure that's why they picked this superhero.

I think that the je ne sais quoi is one of those moments that remind you that these characters are larger than life while still being people. The big finale wasn't quite it for me. I think I've been spoiled by Kurt Busiek's Marvels graphic novel. (More about it at http://serge-lj.livejournal.com/96366.html?mode=reply)

As for his throwing away his secret identity, that is one thing that Marvel characters were never big on. Even Captain America came out a few years ago.

By the way, did you sit thru the ending credits? I did, because I had read they were supposed to be followed by a treat for us comics fans.
