The latest adventure of the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense takes us to the beginnings of the Bureau, circa 1946. HellBoy himself appears only briefly (chasing chicken in New Mexico and eating pasta), but his human father, Professor Bruttenholm, is in Occupied Berlin. His search for information that could help him deal with the very young HellBoy takes him to his Soviet counterpart, an adorable little girl who's been around long enough to once have made a Pact with Peter the Great. Together they uncover in an abandonned insane asylum the remnants of some horrible Nazi experiments involving vampire blood. Oh, and did I tell you about the ghosts? Or about the gorilla cyborgs and their master, an unrepentant Nazi head in a jar?

As for upcoming issues of B.P.R.D., it looks like they won't take us back to the Present just yet. Instead, we'll be told the tale of Johann, the Ectoplasmic Man. That means we'll have to wait a bit longer to get back to Liz Sherman and that mummified Egyptian Princess who likes her a lot because Liz brought kittens to her. Eventually, we'll find out what's going to happen to Benjamin Daimio now that he's become a wendigo.
