Just finished watching Julie Taymor's Across the Universe. I enjoyed it, overall. My favorite line?

"Learn French or die."

mais oui

(well right now I read it better than I speak it, but if I study a bit I'd be able to speak it again.

I think there are things in your life that are of a higher priority.

There were a lot of parts in that movie I really liked. The military induction scene was pretty choice, though the soldiers marching through the jungles of Vietnam carrying the Statue of Liberty to "She's So Heavy" was really just a BIT over the top.

I loved the Janis Joplin doppleganger.

A bit over the top? Nah. The whole movie is rather sedate, if compared to what Ken Russell would have done with it.

I like Joplin's doppleganger too, and what I presume is Hendrix's, but that subplot frustrated me because, while it was resolved, we were never shown how that happened. Same thing with the young Asian woman, who had a crush on Sadie, and yet what made her decide to hang around? Hopeless hope?

As for the interpretation of the Beatles songs, I liked them, but my favorite interpretation of With a Little Help from my Friends remains the one in 1980's movie The Lathe of Heaven.

Is that the opposite of 'Vivre libre ou mourir'?
