game shows

Last night was the second time I attended the Albuquerque SF Society's monthly meetings. I was greeted by the premises's skittish kittens. Actually, all three of them and their mom stayed away from us SF fans. Oh well. It was their loss. Everybody was nice to me. Last month's event was a reading by a local writer. This month, they had a game show hosted by local fan Craig Chrissinger, and found myself drafted into one of the two teams. We lost. It was not my fault. Really. Honest. Heck, when our team had to name movies and shows in which Clancy Brown had been, I came up with 4 titles - but had forgotten about his playing the Creature in The Bride, opposite Sting as Victor Frankenstein and Jennifer Beal as the Bride. How could I forget? Also, when our team had to name 10 actors who played Doctor Who, I'm the one who was able to mention Rowan Atkinson, but I had forgotten about Peter Cushing. Sure, I never saw the movie in which the latter was, but that was no excuse. O the shame!

Next time may be movie night. I'm not sure if cheese is on the menu, but I should probably make some suggestions, at the risk of coming up with such strong fromage that I may be cast out.

Fromage fort =/= Pot au Serge?

;-)

That sounds like fun. I suppose I should try to find the "local" club around here..only these things tend to be at inconvenient times/locations for me. Still, with the Son reaching an age and desire to be at home by himself while we go out, perhaps it will be less inconvenient.

Has your Son shown any interest in that skiffy stuff? And what of your Partner?

Oh, yes, he has. Sadly, the poor child thinks Star Wars starts with Episode 1. However, he does like Galaxy Quest and so on. I've been focusing on some of the classics (Mel Brooks, Humphrey Bogart), but I should drag out my copies of the Star Trek movies too.

Honey likes to watch them, but she doesn't read skiffy (no time to read anything other than work related stuff, or else she falls asleep over the book. I've been trying to get her to read Lois Bujold for ages.) I do have an old friend from college who also lives in the area; she dragged me to Balticon when we were in college so she would be the first one I'd drag along to a club. :-D

"After all those years, my revenge shall be complete! Bwahahahah!!!"

As for your son, have you tried exposing him to Firefly? Of course, the latter may not have been your cup of tea.

Not only have we watched all of Firefly, we've also watched Serenity. We love it.

::smirks:: Revenge? Moi? What revenge? ::/smirk::

That's ok. She's also been trying to get me fencing with her. I fenced in college, and can at least disarm my son in our impromptu bouts. I'd probably hold my own against her, but one never knows. I still know how to do a coupe, even if I can't get the darned accent mark in there.

Whoa.
Your household sounds dangerous.

OK. Since your son has been with Mal and Inara(*), what other skiffy stuff could we use to corrupt his young mind? The Outer Limits?

(*) Did you know she was at the Hugo ceremonies at the 2006 worldcon in Anaheim? Be still, my heart.

Dangerous? Moi?

The first time I demonstrated my mad fencing skillz to him, we had stopped in a Disney store at a mall. He ran over, picked up a small sword, and looked at me. So I picked up a sword and zut zut zut! disarmed him -- out of his hands. So he picked up a dagger -- same thing. A hook -- same thing. He hands me the hook and picks up the sword again -- same thing.

OK, so he was a wee tyke of maybe 6 or 7. Not fair to him, after all, eh?

The other day he tried to surprise me with a plastic sword; all I had was a rolled up paper. I broke the sword before he could finish his "attack". :-D

Now, against a bunch of real fencers and fencing with the wrong hand, I don't do as well. ;-)

Ah, Inara. Be still, my heart. We'll just be over here admiring her, eh?

I have to properly introduce him to Star Trek, as although he claims to have seen it, I think he's mistaking Star Wars for Star Trek. Silly child.

We enjoyed watching Generations, though.

Let me guess... You watched Disney's Zorro TV show too, eh?

When you talk about corrupting your son's mind with Star Trek, are you thinking about the original series? He might be young enough not to notice the primitive SFX, but maybe not so young that you wouldn't have to explain to him why female explorers wear embarassingly short skirts.

I'm glad you're getting out among your local fen at last! I met a couple of Chicago fans via LJ (ashnistrike & her partner) and it was sooo nice to speak my native tongue for a while with real live people.

For me, of course, there is my wife who also is a fan. Still, yes, I know what you mean. At least, while nobody at the office is an F/SF fan, they don't look at me like I'm weird for liking that stuff, which is what they would do if I lived inside an episode of Law & Order. (Besides, one of my cubicle neighbors likes comics, which means that L&O would have TWO suspects to choose from, if something nefarious happened.)

Yeah, being married to a fan helps - my husband is a fan of SF movies & comics, but he's not a big reader so that's a bit of a gap. Guys around the office like to read SF, and I have some good friends there, but none of the girls at the office are geeks like me. And the one person besides me who's interested in writing just left for a job at Abbot labs.

God willin' and the creek don' rise, I'll be at 4th street fantasy con in Minneapolis this time next week, meeting a nice cross-section of geekly writers. Right now some of the route through Wisconsin is flooded, and a thunderstorm just rolled up over my house. We'll see how it looks later in the week.

No geek girl but thou at the office?

My wife and I are readers, and movie/media SF lovers too. Comics? Sue doesn't really read them anymore, but she likes the idea of them. (Please look at the icon I used for this reply.) In your case, the overlap is not perfect, but at least you are both attracted to stories of imagination, and aren't likely to find the other weird for liking this made-up stuff so much.

Have a good time at that con.
Get thee away, flood.

We'd like just a couple of inches of all that rain down here.
