I noticed that the Modesty Blaise book Sabre-Tooth must be a fac-simile of the original 1966 edition because it carries ads for the spy novels of other writers issued by the original publisher.

A Plague of Dragons

What are the Chinese doing with cages full of fat, contented, piebald rats? Hugo Baron investigates the terrible doings of Dr Kwang and a plot to conquer the world by race contamination.

I don't suppose it involves soaking the shoes of Olympic runners with some unspeakable bacteria that'll make their attire fall apart before the finish line.

You remind me of an episode of The Goon Show in which there's a secret plot afoot to make sure England win the Football World Cup by treating the opposing team's boots with some unspeakable preparation that will render them useless in the middle of the match.

It backfires horribly at the last minute: The English team discover they've left their boots back in England, and the opposing team, demonstrating an almost British sense of fair play, say "Here, use ours"...

And that reminds me of the Monty Python skit where an alien blancmange hits English people with a ray that turns them into Scotsmen. Its purpose? It wants to win the Wimbledon tennis tournament and apparently Scots are terrible tennis players.

Why does this sound plausible?
