"You may use my tools, but put them back where they belong."

Strictly speaking, the above words from my dad aren't advice, but a guideline as to How Things Are To Be in his house. Still, this advice/guideline was probably one of his best.

With it, he let me learn on my own. There was a risk that I'd hurt myself, and I had the cuts to show for it, and the blood blisters when a hammer missed its target. But I did learn how to do things that I had never done before, one example being last year's landscaping project, which resulted in my having one nail fall off a finger. It also taught me how to make things like the props (one of which can be seen below) for Susan de Guardiola's masquerade presentation at this year's worldcon - a project in which I suffered no bodily damage, by the way.

One other reason why this advice/guideline was so good is that it got me into the habit of always keeping my stuff in its proper place. It cuts down on how long it takes to clean up my desk or my closet or whatever else. Also, yours truly is quite happy not wasting time looking for things under other things.

It is indeed. If you go back to my worldcon entry, you'll find a link to some masquerade photos. The goofy sun of Susan's entry required two of those t-squares.

I'm sure we could assault your mind with a few more bad jokes related to architectural implements, but we have a rule against puns around here.

You sure that's a T-square? It looks like a giant squeegee to me. It's issued to window-washing crews whose boss is too cheap to spring for scaffolding.

Little did I realize that my creations could serve many purposes beyond their original conception.

I have been searching for my family with the last name of krinard. It is a very uncommon name. Can you or your wife help me out. I have the same story about my great-grandfather coming here from germany.
