Speaking of Jules Verne... The day after Christmas, I caught on TV the Halmi Family's Journey to the Center of the Earth. It achieved something that is no mean feat, as it made the Treat Williams remake of a decade ago feel exciting. At least the latter had blue ferns underground, not a Canadian lake. Rather symptomatic is a scene in the latter where Rick Schroeder, playing the James Mason role, sees dinosaurs for the first time ever, and they're flying ones at that. His only reaction is to casually observe that some people have proposed that birds descended from dinosaurs. Too bad Gertrude the duck wasn't among the cast of that version, which should have been titled Boring to the Center of the Earth. Or maybe At the Earth's Bore.
