I finally saw the movie version of The Avengers. I can now see why it originally wasn't well received. It had a great cast, with Ralph Fiennes as Steed, Sean Connery as the weather-controlling supervillain, and Jim Brodbent as Mother. What was my problem? Uma Therman was wrong for the part of Emma Peel, even though she could pull off wearing the cat suit. The biggest flaw though is that the banter between Steed and Emma fell flat every single time. You should stick with the TV show's best-of DVDs that are also available on NetFlix. And yes, I like the Tara King episodes as much as the ones with Emma Peel.

I rather liked 1933's French movie Zouzou, starring Joséphine Baker. She may not have been a great actress, but she was full of life. Also, to be honest, I rather liked the story, with Joséphine madly in love with the young white man who grew up with her, and who's totally blind to how she feels since he can't see her as anything but his sister. It was quite interesting that the racial differences never came up. By the way, the movie has some musical numbers that almost outdo Busby Berkeley, and there's stuff in the movie that would have sent the author of the Hays Directive into fits of apoplexy.

Last Friday, early, very early in fact, Sue called me from the Bay Area, where she's visiting her family. She had lost her wallet, with in it some credit cards and her driver's license and her SSN card. I took care of as many cancellations and replacements as I could. Sue and I were going to have to go to the local DMV as soon as she flies back here tomororw.

Guess what next-day delivery I got from FedEx today?

Sue's wallet, with a note from the driver in whose taxi it had fallen. He'd made many calls trying to find Sue, but without success, so he wound up mailing it here.

So, you see, there are plenty of people in the world who are honest.

Mr. Dung Tran of San Francisco, our many thanks!
