Tonight, Turner Classic Movies is airing a documentary on Chuck Jones. It'll be followed by some of his classic cartoons, including What's Opera, Doc?, which has the surprising sight of Elmer Fudd as a Wagnerian hero, and the not-at-all surprising sight of Bugs Bunny in drag.

8 p.m. CHUCK JONES: MEMORIES OF CHILDHOOD (2009) – Premiere
8:30 p.m. “The Night Watchman” (1938)
8:40 p.m, “Prest-O, Change-O” (1939)
8:50 p.m, “Sniffles and the Bookworm” (1939)
9 p.m, “Elmer’s Candid Camera” (1940)
9:10 p.m, “Scent-imental Over You” (1947)
9:20 p.m. “Haredevil Hare” (1948)
9:30 p.m. “Duck Amuck” (1953

Not until now, and it sounds like something I should look for on Alibris.

Oh, it's well worth it.

My TiVo says TCMC is showing the documentary followed by Little Women with Katharine Hepburn, with the repeat followed by Knights of the Round Table. I am sad now.

I hope my DVR shows what TCM says is on its schedule tonight. (I just updated my original entry with the official details.)

My assumption is that TCM doesn't have the rights to the cartoons in Canada.

Oh phooee! I'd offer to make a DVD off my DVR's recording, but my DVD machine only plays disks.

Thanks anyway! I watched the documentary and hoped the cartoons would follow; sadly, the schedule was correct.

(Not that I mind Little Women -- in fact, this is my favourite version -- but it's still on my TiVo from the last time they showed it.)

I notice that you said nothing about Knights of the Round Table. Heh. I prefer Robert Taylor as Ivanhoe and not just because someone dumps water on his head from the top of a castle wall when he starts singing - it also has Elizabeth Taylor.

As for Little Women, I also like the June Allyson version, partly because it has a better supporting cast (Elizabeth Taylor and Janet Leigh), but I prefer Hepburn herself. Ever seen the Winona Ryder version? It had Gabriel Byrne as the German teacher.

I didn't mention it because I went to bed and don't have much space left on my TiVo. I've started to watch that version of Ivanhoe a couple of times, but I end up turning it off as soon as Elizabeth Taylor shows up (she just twigs me wrong in general). Memories of the mini-series (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118354/) with Ciarán Hinds and Christopher Lee also make the other difficult to watch: it was just too good. I'm sure I'll get through the movie at some point.

The June Allyson version is okay, but she annoys me even more than Taylor, so my enjoyment level drops significantly. I've only seen the Winona Ryder version once, in the theatre. I recall thinking that I would watch it again if it was the only thing on TV and there was nothing else to do.

I remember that mini-series. Great cast. Olivia Hussey as Rebecca, James Mason as Isaac, John Rhys-Davies as Front-de-boeuf... I didn't care much for the Ivanhoe guy, but Sam Neill was great as Brian de Bois-Guilbert. Then again Neill can often be the best element of some of the things he's been in. The Merlin miniseries comes to mind.
