"Frida"

I watched Julie Taymor's 2002 movie Frida last night and I'm not sure what to think. As is usually the case with Taymor, this biographical film about artist Frida Kahlo is gorgeous. So is Salma Hayek. And yet. Maybe it's because it tries to cover Kahlo's whole life and flits from one episode to the next, but the whole thing feels superficial, not unlike the recent film about Edith Piaf. I never quite got what made Kahlo tick, beyond her being a very rebellious person. As biopics go, Minelli's Lust for Life, which covered many years of Van Gogh's existence, made me feel who he was. So did Huston's Moulin Rouge, which focused on a narrow episode of Toulouse-Lautrec's life, fictionalized as the events may have been.

By the way, I had no idea how short Salma Hayek is until I saw her standing next to Alfred Molina. (Anybody else recognized him from Raiders of the Lost Ark?)

What a fucking piece of storytelling shit.
