I found the following in the October 2009 issue of Locus...

J.R.R.Tolkien was recruited as a codebreaker just before WWII, according to recently discovered documents, and did three days of training at the Government Code and Cypher School in 1939. He was offered a position at Bletchley Park (where the Nazi Enigma code was later broken), but declined for reasons unknown.
