Time for the ritual of flipping my office's calendar to the new month. June's art, taken from Startling Stories's Winter 1946 issue, goes back to the premise of the calendar's earlier months, which emphasized the physical superiority of women over men. How else to explain that, while Captain Future needs a full suit and a fishbowl to protect himself from the surrounding vacuum, his lady companion needs only metallic hotpants and a bra, besides the fishbowl?

I just finished the Hugo Nominees for the short-story category. I know which one will be my top nominee. Here is the list, in no particular order.

“The Cartographer Wasps and the Anarchist Bees” by E. Lily Yu (Clarkesworld, April 2011)
“The Homecoming” by Mike Resnick (Asimov's, April/May 2011)
“Movement” by Nancy Fulda (Asimov's, March 2011)
“The Paper Menagerie” by Ken Liu (The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, March/April 2011)
“Shadow War of the Night Dragons: Book One: The Dead City: Prologue” by John Scalzi (Tor.com)

Sue just took a break to ask me for my help with her novel. She wanted to know if there was one movie where a bikini-clad Raquel Welch came out of the ocean. I said "Fathom". It's a tough job, being married to a writer.
