Officially my father died on February 14, 1993.
To me he died 20 years ago today.
They had brought him back after that heart attack, but he'd been dead for 15 minutes.
That means the person he'd been didn't exist anymore.
The family took him off the machines and let Nature follow its course.
That's what he'd have wanted.

Short tales recently read... Besides the usual great stuff by "Beneath Ceaseless Skies"? I especially liked the scene in James S.A. Corey's "Gods of Risk" where Bobbie the big Martian Marine calmly disassembles a small-time crook's gun before his very eyes. On her birthday, Mary Robinette Kowal gave us the gift of "The Lady Astronaut of Mars", about the first woman to go to Mrs in 1952, now an old woman given the chance to reach for the stars. Finally I reread Beth Bernobich's "River of Souls", in which a young man is reunited with the woman he loved in a past life when his soul was a warrior woman.

Good stuff all around.
