How was your Memorial Day weekend?

Mine was busy, but a good kind of busy. I've been working on the panel I'll be giving all by myself (and hopefully not just to myself) at FiestaCon/WesterCon.

I also got an invitation I'd never have expected.

After we saw a movie on Saturday night, just as I got into our minivan I saw a note under the windshield wiper.

Its author had noticed our bumper stickers and thought we'd interested in knowing about the web site for the local tea party.

What are our bumper stickers? One is Ben Franklin's quote about those who give up freedom for safety deserving neither. The other says "I am a Constitution voter".

Obviously they never noticed the bumper stickers that Our Side sported last year during the Election.

Not only are they a bunch of maroons, but they make me feel dirty at the thought of a certain sexual-intercourse act they accidentally associated themselves with.

Ya know, I never liked those things - too much coconut in 'em for me.

Oh, wait -- that's macaroons! Never mind.
(Have you remembered that it has been twenty years since Gilda Radner died? Time flies.)

Indeed, marrons, not macaroons. That's what I get for learning English from watching Bugs Bunny cartoons.

As for Gilda... Twenty years already? And she was so young.

I thought it was so nifty that you were being invited to a tea party until I remembered the current context down there. I hope your next invitation is much more pleasant.

I hope so too. My wife and I were quite disturbed that, all this time, some people have very badly misinterpreted our bumber stickers. I could remove them, but that would mean I'm letting the Other Side define the terms of the discourse, just like the country did for the previous 8 years. There is no way I'm going to give them that power, so the bumper stickers stay.

This is right-wing doublethink at its finest. They consider themselves to be the spiritual heirs of Franklin and the defenders of the Constitution even as they tear it into strips for use as toilet paper.

Might I suggest that you consider adding a third bumper sticker which might clarify the situation even to their little minds?

That might be a good idea. Something favorable to Obama might make things clear enough, even for the twits of the Other Side.
