Well, our team's Christmas events weren't so bad after all. After lunch at an Indian restaurant, we walked over to San Francisco's Moscone Center for some bowling. I was, to put it mildly, downright terrible at it. Yes, I could blame it on my not having done this since the week before 1969's Moon-landing, or on most of the bowling balls having holes too small for my thumb. The bottom line is that I sucked. It was interesting observing the techniques of my team-mates. One of them, a rather quiet guy, almost danced as he'd prepare to toss the ball toward the pins. One woman who's not very strong, basically walked to the edge of the alley and gently shoved the ball, which putt-putted its slow merry way and eventually reached the pins. And she did better than me.

in that you have to keep at it. When I was on Guam I bowled about 20 games a day (0.25/game) and got the average up to 185 or so. 25 years later I picked up the same ball and tried again for a (mandatory) employee outing. The only thing left was my form.

Oh, I agree. Practice might not make perfect, but it'd make me better than I am. I mean, we had two games and I did pretty well, hitting a strike about three times. Then it got worse and worse, probably because I was trying to do it right but not knowing what I had done right when I did it right.

What I've never liked about bowling is the shoes. Especially since I have, ahem, big feet.
