Today was my last full day in the place where I grew up. I spent most of it keeping company with my mom, who sees me so seldom. True, a 5-year gap between visits is better than the previous 9-year gap, but only slightly so. And she is not getting any younger although she’s only 75 and in good health. On Sunday, when I visited her sisters, one of them asked if I ever think of coming back to live here. I immediately (and gently) said no, and that I had built a life for myself elsewhere. That’s no reason not to tell my mom thanks for the first part of my life. I expect I’ll be showing up in 2 years.

Tomorrow morning I’ll drive back to Montréal’s airport to drop off the rental car before taking a shuttle to the city’s Delta Centre-Ville Hotel, HQ to the worldcon.

Bye for now.
