sergebroom | Bubonicon

I’ve been living in Albuquerque for almost 9 years, but this weekend was the first time I spent a lot of time at Bubonicon(1), which is held here. I had a nice chat with writer Ian Tregillis, whose novel Bitter Seeds is coming out in April. I’m looking forward to his story of British warlocks standing in the way of Nazi supermen. It’s my understanding that his book will have a cover by John Jude Palencar, which is more likely to draw attention than the author’s own idea of showing Cthulhu going nom nom at the Earth. Later we had a discussion with friends of his about what it’d be like to live in Toho’s version of Reality, where one would have to call the boss to say we can’t make it to the office today because of Godzilla, before we talked about the health hazards of breathing in the particles from Mothra’s wings. Yes, Ian is a scientist, and he works at Los Alamos. Why do you ask?

The masquerade was a small affair, but it had some nice costumes. My favorites were the Victorian Green Lantern, who of course sported a green corset, and local fan Patricia Rogers as a Jules Verne lady of adventure, with a ray gun she’d built out of candleholders, some candelabra glass ornament, and what looked like a sprinkler’s water-pistol handle.
