I turned 54 yesterday. The day was marked by well-wishers over at Making Light and elsewhere. Thanks, all of you! I did mostly greasemonkey work at the office, but that's OK because I like being a greasemonkey (as long as I'm appreciated for it). After that, my wife and I wennt to my favorite Mexican restaurant, where I had lots of chips and salsa before my burrito magnifico showed up. Back home, we spent some time looking for my wife's house/car keys. Presents were later presented. Her parents had sent me the DVD set of Burn Notice's first season. Sue gave me the steampunk graphic novel The Five Fists of Science. Then we sat down and watched George Pal's wondeful 1964 movie 7 Faces of Dr. Lao.

"The whole world is a circus if you know how to look at it. The way the sun goes down when you're tired, comes up when you want to be on the move. That's real magic. The way a leaf grows. The song of the birds. The way the desert looks at night, with the moon embracing it. Oh, my boy, that's... that's circus enough for anyone. Every time you watch a rainbow and feel wonder in your heart. Every time you pick up a handful of dust, and see not the dust, but a mystery, a marvel, there in your hand. Every time you stop and think, "I'm alive, and being alive is fantastic!" Every time such a thing happens, you're part of the Circus of Dr. Lao."

Hey, I missed that- I was checked out most of the day yesterday (strangely enough, after some vigorous rose wrestling Tuesday), read little and wrote less.

Happy day-after-your-Birthday!

Julia, w/a 1984 pic of me and my hubby for giggles.

Thanks.

Wrestling with roses? The more I hear about your farm, the more I become convinced that you live in a Realms of Fantasy story.

There's a climber called Long John Silver, which, at the end of the summer, produces canes three-quarters of an inch in diameter and twenty to thirty feet long; unfortunately, it likes to go north, toward the roof, instead of south over the trellises, so energy must be expended to get the larger part of it heading in my preferred direction.

Julia, rose not pictured: that one is Brenda Colvin, which also requires healthy exersize in the fresh air but at least is not growing on the house.

I must stop thinking of your place in fantasy-story terms because I just read "...at least is not growing on the house..." as "...at least is not gnawing on the house..."

Thanks! By the way, did you know that today is also the birthday+1 aniversary for Cardinal Richelieu?

I can't think of you as the Cardinal, more as Athos. Wise, noble, and daring.

Happy day after, and many more days, after.

I may have to watch Dr. Lao again. The first (and last) time I saw it was in the theater release, and I was aggravated that it had failed, IMNSHO to do justice to the book.

Thanks!

It has been decades since I read the book, which I did long before I saw the movie. I see them as two different entities, one being quite dark, and the other so full of of the love of Life.

It would undignified for me to admit that I missed your birthday.

On the other hand, I should offer some kind of appropriate salutation.

...

Let me be the very first to wish you a happy and prosperous 55th birthday.

Seriously? Is Nov. 4 Melbourne Cup day every year, or is it an accident of the calendar in 2009?

My birthday is also Nov. 4, and I've always referred to it as "the day before Guy Fawkes day." If there's an even more obscure historical reference point, I'll adopt it eagerly!

No, Melbourne Cup day is the-first-Tuesday-in-November.

Which means, I should clarify, that in 2009 Melbourne Cup day is the 3rd of November. When I said my birthday was Melbourne Cup day, I meant that it was Melbourne Cup day on the actual day I was born.

This post only showed up in my feed eight hours ago according to the time stamp, and I've been busy with back-to-school and stuff, so I haven't been following any blog comments. Happy belated birthday! I hope the rest of the year is good for you.

Happy belated birthday! I've been sick all week and not checking around even the little bit I usually do so I missed this until today!

It's wonderful having you for a friend.

Thanks, Susan. I knew you were busy, what with all those dance gigs this autumn, but I didn't realize you weren't feeling well. Take care.
