"We read to know we are not alone."

There's some truth to that. Some.

Of course, if this were the Twilight Zone, I might suddenly realize that what I think I'm reading is actually the nonsensical dreams of my dying brain. (I think I should stop watching the Skiffy Channel's traditional New Year marathon of the Zone.)

Unfortunately, I can't stay up that late.

Me neither, which is another reminder that I'm not so young any more. That being said, the marathon usually starts the morning of December 31 and goes until the evening of January 1. The bummer about this year's marathon is that it kept me from checking out what Turner Classic Movies was doing on New Year and so I completely missed the chance of again watching Red Planet Mars and its commie inhabitants being battled against by the hero, who's helped by the Voice of God.

That's not a film I've seen. On the other hand, we took my younger son out to see 'Borat' and 'The Queen'.

And his verdict was? We saw Children of Men yesterday. I'm not sure what I think of it, but I wouldn't recommend it to a person suffering from the blues.

Yeah, that's the thing, I find it hard to go to see or watch at home movies with dark themes because of my proneness to depression. I remember back when I was living in a place that actually had a tv I always wanted to rent "Mulholland Drive", but couldn't bring myself to check it out because of its dark overtones. I am, though, right now going through the first season of "Veronica Mars."

I don't think I'll be spoiling too much by saying that, while many of the main characters die, the deaths don't occur just for the Hell of it, or to be nihilistic. The ending is one of Hope.

Considering what you said, I find myself thinking you do not watch Battlestar Galactica. Its unrelenting grimness is pretty much why my wife doesn't watch it anymore.

Actually, BG was going to be the first choice of a rental, but the first couple of discs weren't available. By the way, is your first comment about the main characters dying about Mulholland Drive, or Veronica Mars?

Neither. I was referring to Children of Men.

He enjoyed both. He was chuckling all through 'Borat'.
