I have many fond memories of my first worldcon, which was held in Boston in 1980. I vividly remember one thing that GoH Damon Knight said during his speech: when he'd seen "The Wizard of Oz" as a kid, he was so disappointed at finding out at the end that it had all been a dream. Apparently the grownups responded:

"What else could it have been?"

I wonder how many fans of F/SF have had similar experiences.

I had read and reread and adored the book as a kid, so when I finally saw the movie I was incensed. IT WAS *NOT* A DREAM, DAMMIT!!

*ahem* Sorry for shouting.

Heheheh...

I'd be curious to know why they came up with that ending for the movie. After all, the people who'd come to watch it couldn't have been opposed to the idea of Oz as a real place within the story's context. Go figure.

(By the way, that ending made it into kung fu spoof "A Fistful of Yen".)

Probably because of the grownups' reaction to Damon Knight. (Idiots)

I've never really thought of it as a dream, more a move from one universe to another and back.

That's how I prefer to see it too.
