There is something very fulfilling to a job where you work 12-hour days to keep things from falling apart, and your manager shows gratitude by taking you to task for thinking that handling immediate crises is no more important than completing a mandatory online class that you already went thru twice because the darn thing kept freezing on you.

Y'know, I'm beginning to suspect -- just suspect! -- that you have a really shitty job. And I'm awfully darn sorry about that.

The 'funny' thing is that what gets me out of my funk about my job is the work itself. Also, it helps to think back to the 2 years I spent working for the Gap, with Colonel Klink in charge of our team. There can always be worse situations than the one I'm in. And, again, there is the work itself, of which I am quite proud.

I used to get pulled off managerial budgeting and spreadsheet duties (IBM S/34 spreadsheets, not these 1-2-3 things kids have now!) for the company's VP because the Controller wanted me to make collection calls.

My manager isn't quite that bad, and he certainly is far better than his predecessor, who was unqualified and whose purpose seemed to be to sink me professionally. Unfortunately, when he stands out in a negative manner to his superiors because of one person below him, this is what tends to happen, and all the good deeds then mean nothing to him. Ah well... I'll soon see what he really thinks, what with my mid-year review coming up.
