I lived in California for 11 years. Whenever I go to the Bay Area, it pulls at my heart and, yes, that's the cue to start playing Tony Bennett's song. That being said, I never liked the system of Propositions, whereby amateurs get to write laws that a few voters then put into the books.

This is to say that I am happy with the recent decision regarding Prop 8.

I don't think there's anything amateurish about writing the language of Propositions. I think there's a bunch of lawyers who do it, trying to obfuscate the actual meaning and to write them in such a way that the obvious answer is the one which will actually cause your vote to go the opposite way from that which you intend. There are a lot of negatives that go into that wording.

Case in point: Prop 8 itself. If you were in favor of gay marriage you'd think you should vote affirmatively, but that would be exactly the wrong thing to do.

All the more reason to dislike the whole Prop system. At least, if someone tried to pull that stunt in a real legislature, the bill would be torn to pieces by the opposition. It'd all be happening within one physical building, where things are more easily contained than by that ethereal court of 'public opinion'.
