Last night, I did my first bit of socializing of the month. The local SF club had its meeting and it was the chance for me to chat with quite a few people, some for the first time since I've been attending. I gave back to Pat Rogers her DVD set of "The Invisible Man", but we didn't get to talk much because she had to leave early: she was flying to Los Angeles today for a weekend-long event where Ray Bradbury is the Guest of Honor. Most of the club's meeting was about the upcoming local con, Bubonicon, after which they showed the first 2 episodes of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I first saw it in 1981, in rather unpleasant circumstances, but I don't think that's why the whole thing still isn't my cup of tea. Anyway. After that, some of us went to the nearby Appleby's and I found myself chatting with SF's next generation, 21-year-olds Hillary & Ariane. They may not know who Edgar Rice Burroughs is, and they may lean more toward media SF or media-related fanfic, but they definitely are SF fans. Hillary was quite thrilled that I share her love of George Pal's "The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao". When she referred to herself as a kid, I pointed to her that even us old geezers still think of ourselves as young inside.

So, overall, it was a nice evening, definitely worth going to bed at 12:45am, even though my cell phone went off not long after that due to some work problems. I did manage to go back to sleep. Then my dogs woke up.

Almost forgot.

While I was at the club's meeting, my wife had dinner with a friend at Garduño's, which is part of a Mexican-restaurant chain, a nice one but still the last place where she expected to see Cyndi Lauper.
