Over at LiveJournal's community The Inferior4+1, author Paul Di Filippo offers a montage of silent-movie scenes that would have sent their creators to prison. Fascinating, although I don't get what's objectionable about feet under a table.

It's funny how one generation can be genuinely alien to another. If we ever managed time travel, we wouldn't *need* extraplanetary intelligence; a trip back to the 1700s would be quite culture shock enough.

Indeed. It probably would also be a shock to our stomach.

Jokes aside, I remember long ago deciding to read Shogun because it was recommended by SF writers as having what we look for in an SF novel.
