"HellBoy: The Storm"

“Yeah, we were just passing through and I stopped in to see Bill here, who I’ve known for a long time – since that thing with the headless nun back in ’62… Guess that was a little before your time.”

Thus begins the 3-issue story ”The Storm”, in which HellBoy finds that long-gone knights are coming out of their graves to again defend England. Nimuë is back and planning to rid Earth of all humankind. Standing in her way is Excalibur-wielding HellBoy, who is himself planning to get at her once he's done with the hedgehog made monstrous by the blood of murdered Queen Mab.

One thing I eventually learned about Mike Mignola’s stories is that it’s best to wait until all parts of the tale are available before reading it. Even then, it can be tough going when things that happened in an earlier story resurface in the more recent one with barely any explanation – if any.

Did I mention the giant monster that’s emerged from a California lake?
