Actor Robert Ryan, who passed away in 1973, often played characters who were angry, or crazy, or downright nasty. If you ever saw "Bad Day at Black Rock", you'll know what I mean. And yet, as I re-discovered him on Turner Classic Movies, I realized that I quite liked him. I recently looked him up on IMdb.com and found even more reasons to like him.

Chicago born, distinguished US actor and long time civil rights campaigner, Robert Ryan served in the United States Marines as a drill instructor (winning a boxing championship) and went on to become a key figure in post WWII American film noir and western productions. (...) Primarily a man of pacifist beliefs, Ryan often found it a challenge playing sadistic and racist characters that very much were at odds with his own personal ideals. Additionally, Ryan actively campaigned for improved civil rights, restricting the growth of nuclear weapons and he strongly opposed McCarthyism and its abuse of innocent persons.

I expect that very few recruits were foolish enough to give him any lip more than once - if ever. Also, a boxing match between him and Joe McCarthy is something I'd have paid good money to see.

I also discovered that he was originally was cast to play Captain Deckard on Star Trek's episode "The Doomsday Machine". I'd have loved to see that.

That being said, here is a photo of him playing a famous SF character.
