Our family counts a new member since yesterday.

This is Rocky. My wife was told by the Humane Society that he's 2 years old, and part Maine Coon. He's quite friendly, when not running away due to his still being spooked by his new home. So far, he and the dogs ignore each other. As for the cats... Agatha has done quite a bit of growling at him, and usually mellow Jefferson has been having hissy fits whenever Rocky comes too close. A Balance of Terror will eventually be arrived at.

Cute little fellow.

Thanks. Once he stops being spooked by things, he'll decide it's safe to eat. My wife was told that, from the size of his paws, he's likely to be a big boy when he's fully grown.

Maine Coon cats do run big.

Welcome, Rocky!

He's only part Main Coon, but he does have ear tufts albeit small ones. Still, he'll probably grow big, yes.

Thanks, MK. He was a bit shy with me this morning, but he eventually decided I was ok and proceeded to use my hand as a toy. Broke skin a bit. I'll live. :-)

Cute kitty. Hope the cat balancing goes smoothly and quickly.

I volunteer at a shelter--I'm always happy when a cat finds a good home.

When we got doguette Nahla in 2001, I actually had to go into the room where all the animals are kept. Heart-breaking.

Rocky Raccoon?

I'm told coons don't reach full growth until they turn four or five, and that males get a lot bigger than the females.

He does indeed look to be a very fine critter.

(We just discovered last night that our new neighbors, instead of having one inside cat as previously believed, have two outside ones. They must have finally decided they could be let out. Of course they climbed the fence immediately. One seems to have already adopted our front porch.)

The agreement with the Humane Society is that we won't let him go outside. Hopefully he won't be like Agatha, who sneaks out whenever she can, and who is quite fast about it. I don't really like that because there are coyotes in the neighborhood.

I always thought Agatha looked like a Bad Example.

Coyotes were a problem in my last neighborhood, and everyone was on the alert. Fortunately our last cat Sophie was scared of outside, except with a screen between her and it. So we gave her a little chicken-wire coop with a cat door--one of the few cat doors ever that led through a bookcase, I feel sure.

Agatha indeed is a bad cat. Luckily she's smart and very fast, especially if something is trying to eat her. That being said, I love the idea of a cat door thru a bookcase.

This was taken in 2007, and went away a year or so later, when we were preparing to sell that house. And yes, that was my study.

What Sophie refers to can be found on the internet, by googling cat outdoor or cat patio -- there's plans for you to do it yourself, or you can buy the entire package and put it together. It started as a way for city dwellers in highrises to give their cats safe outdoor spaces, and blossomed. I'm very tempted myself, just don't have the time or space yet...
