“Les aventures extraordinaires d’Adele Blanc-Sec” is based on Jacques Tardi’s graphic novels about Adèle Blanc-Sec, an investigator in Paris early in the 20th Century. Since it's set in 1911, one can't call it steampunk, or bustlepunk. It's too early for it to be dieselpunk, and one could be tempted to call it edwardianpunk, except that France most likely wouldn't care for the label, as it honors their neighbor across the Channel.

How about LaBelleEpoquePunk?

That being said... I’ll have to finally acquire the novels next time I go to Québec City. As for the film… It came out in early April, but I haven’t heard of any American release. Not that surprising, come to think of it. They’d have to either dub it, or go the subtitle route. That’s two strikes against it, for most people. I’ll be quite happy if I’m wrong.

Speaking of which... If you could read French, I'd recommend Pierre Pevel's fantasy novel "Les Enchantements d'Ambremer". Think of the Paris of the movie "Gigi", but with water nymphs in the city's fountains, dragons as librarians, and a special subway station to reach Elfland.

Damn. That sounds awesome, but I don't read French well enough to handle it in the original. Is there an English translation by any chance?

I think his more recent book - about Cardinal Richelieu's elite force of occult-fighting sword-wielders - is translated, but not this one, alas.

I'd buy the DVD either way, although I admit I'd prefer dubbed; I can't really watch the movie when I'm trying to read the subtitles. Do let me know if you find a copy!

I'm ok with subtitles except when I understand the original language. I can't help being drawn to reading words, and then I groan when I see that the translation is inaccurate. Hopefully, if I find the DVD, I'll turn the subtitles off. You can borrow it when I'm done with it.

If I can find the novels in Ottawa/Gatineau, want me to pick them up for you?

Really? Thanks! I think the first graphic novels were reprinted as one big book in the $50 price range. Thanks again.

No problem. It'll give me an excuse to go bookstore-hopping (as if I needed one) :-)

Adèle ne s'est pas encore pointée chez nous. Nous partons demain pour la region de San Francisco, et serons de retour le 27 Décembre. Je te dis ca parce que je ne veux pas que tu me croies un ingrat.

Merci encore,

A friend in Europe is going to get me the DVD, which can be played on region-free players, or on laptops with VLC, a free software. I guess I'll be circulating the DVD around North-America, eh?

If your friend can get multiple copies, I'll be happy to reimburse you for one. We have a region-free player.
