Today I took Freya, aka the Viking Love Goddess, to the vet for some surgery. Last year, whe she jumped off our bed, she took a bad fall and completely ripped out the cruciate ligaments of one hind leg. She went thru surgery that her doctor had not had to do in over 20 years. She recovered and now walks normally although she's shown no inclination to sleep on our bed since then. Last week though, my wife noticed a hard lump near that leg's knee so I had the doctor take a look and told me what it was: unbeknownst to me, the repair work done last year had involved a nylon wire, to reinforce her leg while it was healing, and one of the clamps holding the wire had apparently come off. So she went in today, and they removed the wire and both clamps. She won't be putting any weight on that leg for a few days, but she'll be fine.

I've still got bits of wire in my knee from a torn patellar tendon back in '98. Nobody's suggested I have those removed. Lucky her.

In her case they had no real choice because the clamp holding the wire was moving around. Does you wire bother you a lot?

I got full range of motion back within three months of the cast coming off, but there's still discomfort and fairly frequent stiffness. The odds of that knee becoming arthritic went way up the moment the repairs were done, too.

Poor Freya! If you want her back on your bed, you can buy pet steps. I have a pair that Spirit used to get to the heating pad in the kitchen window before Junie frightened her to pieces.

I was supposed to keep a 14" plate and 5" bar, plus screws, pins, and such, in my left ankle forever. But after the third surgery, my bones started tossing out all that metal so I had the fourth surgery to get it out in a neat method. I was supposed to wear a brace for the rest of my life, but my ankle joined back together after only about 12 years and I don't wear a brace anymore.

It's just as well that I didn't keep all that hardware because I get a lot of MRI/MRAs these days.

Glad to hear you didn't have to carry all that metal around after all. As for Freya... We decided not to encourage her to get back on the bed because we have two other dogs who can jump in, and three dogs and two humans were making for crowded sleeping quarters.
