I saw the movie "300" last night. It was worse than I expected, but better than the time I slammed my car's door on my finger tip. And better than Highlander 2.

The reviews make it sound pretty awful.

And racist, with most of the Persian characters being played by black actors, except for Xerxès who was played like a prissy sadistic drag queen, thus setting up the contrast between the Spartan manliness and the Persian decadence.

I could have dealt with the larger-than-life stuff. Heck, I read comics, don't I? But their idea of larger-than-life acting was to grit their teeth and shout every line of dialog. Maybe they should have taken a close look at how that was done in Lord of the Ring.

It was, to put it mildly, a piece of crap.

I should definitely miss it then. It does sound like something that fills a needed void.

It apparently fills the void of 20-year-old males, based on the audience we saw it with, and considering that they applauded at the end.

I agree that the reviews didn't exactly make me run to see it. NPR basically trashed it, in a polite way.

They have been promoting it for soooooo long I actually got my hopes up for it, but after it was panned, I decided to wait for it to hit Netflix.

Speaking of, I've been watching the first season of Epitafios, a subtitled HBO show with Julio Chavez and Antonio Birabent, about a killer being chased by the cops. It's pretty darn good, like most HBO shows.

Ok, that was totally unrelated to 300... I'm just offering some recommended watching.

Please do make recommendations. By the way, the best thing about "300" was the coming attraction for Grindhouse, a double feature by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez that spoofs cheesy exploitation movies so well that even the coming attraction was all scratched as if it had been run a thousand times thru the movie projector.

Hey, I remember those scratches. I was a projectionist for a few weeks when I was on Kwajalein in the mid-1970s; one of the films I got stuck showing was "Hamlet" with Maximilian Schell in the title role. Looking at imdb, it appears that was the 1961 West German TV production, which seems odd, but anyway...that was the scratchiest film I'd ever seen to that point. It was hard to tell when the reel-change cue appeared because the film was in such terrible condition.

I saw that German version of Hamlet years ago. On the Mystery Science Theater.

As for Grindhouse... They pushed the versimilitude to the point that, at the end, the coming attraction got jammed and the film melted. The lack of reaction from the audience was rather... interesting.
