Uncle Sam's share

Our tax consultant gave us a pleasant surprise this afternoon. Not only do we owe Uncle Sam an amount so low it wouldn't pay for a plane ticket to the Bay Area unless Southwest had a really awesome sale, but New Mexico owes us enough that it'd pay for a plane ticket to Montreal plus part of a car rental.

Congratulations! I usually pay under a hundred to the feds, nothing to the state, and in addition, no property tax to the city.

Thanks! I'm sure the city property tax will be -- I already have the form to fill out and I'm completely disabled and fall into the bottom range of income, so I won't have to pay anything there. The others are very likely.

Two years ago, I owed the feds $99 and sent in a check. When it hadn't come back through the credit union, I called around and the IRS said they had definitely deposited it and the credit union said the IRS had never deposited it. So I just keep waiting for one of them to find something out.

As long as you keep documentation, they can hardly blame you when they find out. True, they could blame you anyway, but there isn't a thing they can do against you.
