Fool's Day
Apr. 1st, 2011 07:22 amFool's Day so far...
I was trying to get back to sleep when my cell phone went off at 3am. Our only mainframe-based job, which never fails, had failed. Turns out that a person (read 'clown') in a group other than ours had had our ID deleted. I filled up some online form and everything should be restored later today, but this is time that could be better spent.
Besides that... Last week I got my yearly review and it actually was the best I've had in a decade. I waited until now to mention this because it had been written by my boss who's been fired and I was waiting to see if my current boss would add some goodies - for example a promotion to team lead. Instead I wound up getting a raise of $71.24 per paycheck. I guess I'll go blow half of this week's raise on some stuff at the comics store.
Besides that... Our team has a project going on that involves rebuilding our system from the ground up. It's a few years late, and what's currently going on is the 2nd attempt at it with most of the coding being done by contractors. Anyway, it's supposed to finally be ready by the end of this year. Just in time for the world to end according to the Mayan calendar. The team had a meeting on Wednesday, when the subject came up about easing us into that system so that we can - you know - maintain it, the boss outright said that my knowledge of the old system was so valuable (meaning, I'm the only person left who understands it, what with everybody else having left) that I'd be the last person transfered over. As you an imagine, that left me quite uncomfortable. For one thing, contractors who don't understand the old system would be in charge of its maintenance, which means they'd constantly be coming to me. I had lived (barely) thru such a situation during last year's merger, and I had no desire to do so again. Things are already such that I never can take a day off with work's disruptions. Also, I do not wish to become technologically obsolete. Anyway, I expressed those concerns to my boss yesterday, and I'm proud to say that I did so without busting his ear drums, although he did - in his own words - get the message "loud and clear". I'll see if he actually does something about it. He probably will because he knows that otherwise I'll leave. Then they'll be in deep doodoo.
One other thing I brought up is leadership. Mine, I mean. Various comments had been made by others about my not seizing leadership on some occasions when I supposedly could have, and I told him those comments were extremely offensive. I outright said that, without me, our team's contribution to the merger would have failed miserably. I pointed out that I may not be a leader, but that I am very responsible and that I always was the one making sure that people had what they needed. By the way, guess who I was thinking of when I said that last bit?
