Last night, we watched 2008's "Sharpe's Peril", which, like 2006's "Sharpe's Challenge", is set in India. I enjoyed the whole thing. Not only do we get a doublecrossing Frenchman and a doublecrossing Russian and various other nasties, but Sharpe takes off his shirt, gets thrown into a cobra pit, shot in the arm and stabbed in the chest. We get a beautiful Indian Princess, a beautiful Frenchwoman, neither of them a doublecrosser, and a disappearing elephant. Oh, and Sharpe's friend Harper is helped by an Indian man when that pesky kidney stone of his becomes a real problem.

I saw the "Sharpe's" movies on [public TV] a few years ago -- I thought they were good, considering the time and backgrounds.

We watched all the episodes when they were aired on PBS, plus the later ones they never aired when we bought the whole thing as a VHS set. (How quaint that last bit sounds.)

Clearly, I need to watch these, to indulge my passion for really pretty men in really pretty period military uniforms!

You'll be glad to hear that there was a whole series of those movies made in the 1990s. I wonder if Bean's role as Boromir had people rediscover them, and someone thought it'd be a good idea to make a few more.

I knew that a whole series existed -- not unlike the Hornblower films. Which are my current drug of choice. I look forward to glutting myself on them!

I was bummed when they stopped making those movies with Ioan Gruffud.

it would be nice if they did more, now that he's aged (so VERY gracefully) into the role for the later years.

Even if there wouldn't be any more charming Archie Kennedy. (I CRIED BUCKETS.)

But at least you later got to see the actor in "Galactica". Back to Gruffud... I recently noticed that his co-star in "Amazing Grace" was Benedict Cumberbatch, who's recently been noticed with the "Sherlock" mysteries on PBS.

Oh, believe me, this has been NOTICED, as the kid is a HUGE Sherlock fan, and we have this Google Image Search habit. I personally think Cumberbatch is sort of funny-looking.

We call Apollo "Space!Archie."

..but interesting. (He has a small part in "Creation", in case the kid wants to know.) Speaking of "Sherlock"... I wonder if/when there'll be new episodes, what with Martin Freeman, who plays Watson, currently being busy playing Bilbo Baggins.
