I just finished Asimov's April/May issue. Not only did it contain William Preston's "Clockworks", which has gone on my list of Hugo nominees for next year. Not only did I enjoy Kristine Kathryn Rusch's "Becalmed". Not only did I read Norman Spinrad's book reviews - in spite of my usual habit of avoiding him, due to my perception (false as it may be) that he seems to dislike SF. Not only that, but those reviews revealed that he likes Steampunk, and quite possibly for the same reasons I do.

Norman doesn't dislike SF. It's just that we who write it are a constant disappointment to him.

I thought that might be the other explanation. Still, I wonder if one should judge a work by what its author intended, or by what the reader feels the author should have intended. Anyway, what really shocked me is that, because of this background, I'd have expected Norman to hate Steampunk.

Spinrad has a story in the next issue; I'm not there yet.

I'm not there yet either, but I am feeling more generous toward him, what with his showing himself more open-minded than a certain Scottish author I collided it.

LOL It's actually two issues -- July -- and I wasn't impressed.
