"What is the word that scares relational databases the most?"
"I don't know."
"The word 'commit'."

So said my friend Yoko to me during BayCon. We then went on to talk about database performance issues, and how there are pills for that. That's what happens when IT people hang out together.

It's true that the Oracle database is such a sensitive thing that it takes little to make its performance droop.

Ooooh! That suggests that I might be able to ask you databaseish questions... (and really -- the pills they should be providing for database performance issues are some combination of sedative euphorics, so you don't mind the pain as much...)

I take it that you find the handling of databases not overly pleasurable.

If I'm the one handling the database, it usually means that there's a missing or ... dubiously capable ... DBA in the picture, and that the database (or databases) is in a questionable state.

... so given that I pretty much only deal with databases that are screwed up, in a situation where the people who should be responsible don't exist... yup, not all that happy with databases.

In other words, you find them debasing?

Not just debasing, but absolutely NOT normal!

Maybe not normal, but acceptable as long as it's between consulting adults.

There's a joke in here about hot physical standbys... but it's too early for me to get it quite sorted out.
