Evie Walker finds that out early at the beginning of Carrie Vaughn’s novel “Discord’s Apple”. The world is falling apart, and so is her own world. She’s driven all the way from Los Angeles to Hopes Fort, Colorado, because her father is dying of cancer and she’s barely arrived that an old woman asks her for some glass slippers in the family home’s mysterious Storeroom. The Room also contains a certain Apple made of solid gold that another woman says is her, but neither the House nor Evie will let her in. Hera, for it is she, is not the kind of person who takes no for an answer, and she sends out some accomplices, including a nasty gent called Robin Goodfellow. Evie isn’t alone though and has at her side an Irish wolfhound named Mab, a young man who's pulled a certain sword out of a huge boulder in the backyard, and Alex, who, because of his interference in the Trojan War, was cursed by Apollo to never die.
